Definition (deutsch): »Eine erklärende Anmerkung oder Kommentar; im Besonderen eine antike exegetische Anmerkung oder Kommentar zu einer Stelle in einem griechischen oder lateinischen Autor« (Oxford English Dictionary ²1989, S. 631) (übersetzt) , vgl. auch »kurze Erklärung sprachlich oder inhaltlich schwieriger Textstellen am Rand einer Papyruskolumne oder einer H[andschriften]seite« (Hönscheid 2003) , wobei die physische Platzierung nicht wesentlich ist.
Definition (englisch): »An explanatory note or comment; spec[ifically] an ancient exegetical note or comment upon a passage in a Greek or Latin author« (Oxford English Dictionary ²1989, S. 631) ; cf. also »a short explanation of difficult (regarding the language or the content) text passages in the margin of a papyrus column or a manuscript page« (Hönscheid 2003) (translated) , the physical placement however being not essential.
